When I was a kid, there were hundreds of fireflies every summer night. Now we’re lucky if there’s one. Last night we went to get ice cream and a firefly appeared. Ben stood and watched and after awhile he started saying “thank you” every time the firefly lit up. As I was wrapping my head around this sentiment Ben said, “thank you, firefly for lighting the way.”
He is a special boy. We have lots of fireflies here in Morristown, New Jersey, away from the lights of The City.
And at the Jersey shore, in Spring Lake fireflies are also plentiful. And now, to follow Benjamin’s example, I will start to say “thank you” when they light my way as well.
